'm jim axelrod. a lot of holiday plans are out the window tonight due to a powerful storm system that stranded travelers on highways and at airports. it's blamed in at least six deaths. in the south, there are reports that 41 tornadoes have touched down since yesterday. one of them sheered off the front of the trinity episcopal church in mobile, alabama. luckily, no one was injured. the same system brought a blizzard to parts of the midwest, forcing the cancellation of more than 1,400 flights. tonight, it's headed to the northeast. winter storm warnings have already been posted. troy kehoe of our cbs station in indianapolis begins our coverage. troy? >> reporter: well, jim, here in bloomington, indiana, we've already seen 11.5 inches of snow so far, and it is still coming down with blizzard conditions here in the midwest. this has been a two-day storm leaving much of the country paralyzed. blinding snow with wind gusts topping 35 miles an hour have created whiteout conditions in the plains in midwest. by midday, a half-foot of snow had already fallen in indianapolis. george cumm

they get there in the first place? >> well, that man you just saw harris jim swayze was walking four dogs. one of the dogs ran into the ice and fell through holding himself up with just front paws. jim swayze went after the dogs but the ice kept breaking away. he called 911. then called his cousin who is san animal control officer. the cousin's boyfriend showed up. went after the dog and right as he reached ice broke away. and he got stuck in the mud below and had to wait an hour for firefighters to arrive. listen. the big concern was the dog. they the dog had been in the without for why quite a while. the amount of time spent in the water is very short lived. you can't spent a lot of time in these cold temperatures and hope to survive. the rescue actually went pretty quickly. >> it went quickly but all tolled it still took an hour and a half before they pulled bart out of that water, harris. >> harris: that's a long time to be in the water. how is the dog doing? the hound dog is doing fine now. but bart is 11 years old. first the vet was very worried about him. they rapid him up in elect

jim ramstead and patrick kennedy talking about being in recovery, and the fact that good people get this disease. it's a bad disease. but good people get it and successful people get it and we can recover. >> as she mentioned, we talked about it in the past, it's been a disease that men have battled. what is it you think people will be able take away from the documentary to open their eyes to the problem at hand? >> well, i think two-fold. one, this stigma, it is interesting that for mothers in particular, there's this idea in our society that we should be perfect and on all the time. i think there is a real harsh judgment against women that might pick up a drink to cope and before they know it, this disease really grabs them. i think that's one thing. and i also think understanding the psychological pressures that women are under nowadays is very, very key. seeing that in our sisters and our mothers and our friends and our children, being able to understand more and deal with it with compassion and sympathy instead of judgment. >> the movie will be premiering here in the d.c. area.
